Kenney, General George
1889–1977
   Kenney was MacArthur’s Air Commander for the operations in New Guinea and the Solomons. When he arrived to take up his appointment as Commander in Chief of the US Far East Air Force in the southwest Pacific, he found the situation was confused. US-Australian rivalry led him to separate the USAAF and RAAF, and he made the administrative side more efficient. For the New Guinea campaign he developed the use of air transport for troops in the jungle. He took part in the massive invasion of the Philippines and for the operations in Corregidor started to use napalm bombs. He was a man of tremendous energy and ambition and attended the Japanese surrender ceremony in Tokyo Bay on 2 September 1945.
